Venerable Edel Quinn

September 14th 2007 will start the centenary year of the birth of Venerable Edel Quinn.  This special year will extend from September 2007 to September 2008.  During this year many councils in the Legion will hold special celebrations of her life.  More later on this.

This is and good time to remember a few details about Edel, her life in the Legion and her cause.

  1. Edel Quinn was born in Kanturk, County Cork, Ireland on September 14, 1907.  Her ambition was to enter a contemplative convent, but ill health prevented her from doing so.  The family moved to Monkstown, County Dublin in 1925.

  2. At the age of 20 she joined the Legion of Mary in Dublin.  In 1936 she was appointed Legion of Mary envoy, to establish the Legion in the vast territories of eastern and central Africa.

  3. Edel established hundreds of Legion branches even as far as Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.  She mobilized thousands of Africans in the service of the Church.

  4. After 8 years of heroic labor, Edel died on May 12, 1944, in Nairobi, Kenya ,where she is buried in the Missionaries cemetery.

  5. Following a solemn declaration on December 15, 1994 by Pope John Paul II affirming her heroic sanctity, Edel Quinn now bears the title "Venerable".

  6. One properly attested miracle (attributed to her intercession) is required for beatification.

Legion of Mary Television

Legion of Mary Television has for several years presented an ongoing series on Vocations in the Church.

Each episode in the series shows a little about what it is like to be a priest, nun, brother or deacon.

Programs include both diocesan and order priests and nuns.

Past programs have shown life as a Benedictine priest or brother, Carmelite nuns, Trappists, Dominicans, Legionaries of Christ and other religious orders, in addition to priests for the New York Archdiocese.

Programs are shown in Manhattan on channel 67 at 9:30 Sunday mornings

Future programs will present the stories of three members of the Legion of Mary whose causes for possible canonization have been introduced.  More later.
